Aeterna Roma is an alternative universe version of the Roman Empire. Despite this, the game is endeavours to have some historical accuracy as well. The game is set in 56AD and Rome is currently under the rule of the Emperor Claudius Sabucius Augustus Caesar, though who knows for how much longer. AR has boards where you may play out characters who live within the provinces, whether they be romans or Peregrini (free born people under roman rule).

Guide for new members

Welcome to Aeterna Roma, a Role-Playing Game set on the middle of the 1st century, when Rome was in what historians call “Pax Romana”. Although it is Alternate Universe, all of us here try to aim for historical accuracy, as much as it can be done. That said, it does not required you to have an extensive knowledge of history. In fact the only requirements are that you want to have fun and you are willing to play along. This guide aims at clarifying any potential doubts or questions you might have as you take your first steps into the game. I will touch some of the most important actions you should take in order to join in smoothly and begin to have fun RPing with us.

First of all, you already accomplished step 1: You are here reading and ready to start. After you make the decision about joining, you start by registering an account, it is very user-friendly. You will be sent an e-mail on the address you provide with an Activation Code and then you are in.

After that, you will either create a Character or adopt one of the many wonderful Canon Characters available. I will explain the process as we move along. First, Original Character Creation:

In the Joining Board you will write a complete Bio for your character using this template. You just copy and paste the code and fill in the blanks….that simple! After that is done, one of the Staff Members will read the bio, suggest changes if they applied and then approve it. You will be ask to change your display name to your character’s and the bio will be moved to its respective Class Status. You can also claim a Play By that is not taken by other players so you can give a face to your character. You are set to go.

For canon’s, the process is very similar. To see the Canon Characters, you go to Audition Board and have a look at all the different characters available to you. If you decide to take one (or two, or three), you will apply for the character the same way you do with an original one, keeping in mind to keep the information compatible with the brief description of the character. It will then go through the same process. Be sure to ask in the Adoptable/Canon board if you can audition for the Character. This is to ensure that the character is available for you. There is also another minor requirement when taking a Canon: The need for a dedicated player, because Canon Characters are required to be very active.

Once you are accepted, then it begins. You will be able to Role-play with your character. See it as this been a story, a play or a movie where your Character is the main actor. You will act him through your movie, make choices with it, take it to wherever path you wish, always keeping in mind to avoid Power-playing or all Knowing posts. Also, avoid making historical references about events that are outside the timeframe of the game. For example, there cannot be a reference to Constantine, because he haven’t been born by the timeframe of the game (which is 56 AD). And the rule of thumb is: Be polite, be giving to other players and have fun. With canon characters, the story have to be in parallel with the main plot, which is challenging and fun to play too.

Do not be shy, ask questions, ask for plots with other characters, be creative and just jump in. We are a bunch of friendly folks, so do not be afraid of asking or suggesting. There are a lot of people that will love to RP with you.
And that’s it! That simple. Welcome to Aeterna Roma and the AeRo Family!
